Dundullimal’s masonry stables were constructed with locally sourced sandstone in about 1848.
Thick walls of this building are still strong and have cool spaces. It was used to house the stablemaster, had secure stalls for horses, shelter for a carriage, a blacksmiths workshop, and had two spaces with lowered floors. Being below ground kept food and stores cool in the unforgiving Dubbo heat.
Dundullimal Homestead is in a favorable enviroment for Australian native blue-banded bees. Females set up solitary nests within a burrow or in masonry as we see in this image. Often mistaken for a kind of fly, they rarely sting. You will notice their striking irridesant blue stripes on their abdomen.
